Blanca Como La Cal
Blanca Como La Cal
I lived in Granada, Spain for seven years, in the Albaicín. The cal-encrusted houses in this medieval neighborhood were newly whitewashed each spring. Thick strata of lime blanketed every surface like fallen snow under the hot Andalusian sun. It is said that cal assuaged the cravings of pregnant women who scraped the walls, and ate it, during the Spanish civil war. Cal – calcium – haunts my memories.
Porous is one of several sculptures that reflect my fascination with cal, or limestone whitewash. Using a broad paintbrush, I applied multiple layers of synthetic paper clay to recall that parched, bone white.
